What is a "mother"? She's more than just the person who brought you into this world; she's the person who holds your hand, wipes away your tears, cooks your favourite meal, nags you about your hair, job or the way you wear your pants. She is the number one person you can count on in life. It's only appropriate that many countries around the world recognize a special day in her honour. In Canada, we celebrate Mother's Day the second Sunday in May. We usually give her flowers, take her out for lunch or dinner and give her gifts (my Mom especially likes perfume and has dropped many hints over the last few weeks).
Almost every country has their own Mother's Day tradition. Here are a few examples:
In Afghanistan, Mother's Day is celebrated in June. In Brazil, it's an unofficial holiday celebrated on the same day as in Canada. India and Pakistan also celebrate Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. In China, carnations are the most popular flower to give mothers, and the day was adopted to help poor mothers in rural areas. In Greece, Mother's Day falls on the Eastern Orthodox feast day of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple on February 2. The Thais celebrate Mother's Day on the birthday of the Queen of Thailand, Queen Sirikit, on August 12. Americans celebrate it on the same day as Canadians, and the Brits celebrate it on the fourth Sunday of Lent (April 3 this year) and call it "Mothering Sunday".
Regardless of the differences in the way various cultures celebrate Mother's Day, they all have one thing in common: they recognize that mothers are people of great value not only because of the life they give, but because of their unconditional love and devotion to their children. Yay for Moms!
If you are celebrating Mother's Day this Sunday and are unfortunately far away from this most wonderful of people, why not send her a gift through AlertPay? It's easy, instant and 100% secure. If it's too late to send flowers, chocolates or perfume, sending a little money is a nice gesture so she can buy whatever she wants.
To all you mothers out there, Happy Mother's Day from the AlertPay Team!
